Marian Kołodziej (1921-2009) - Polish visual artist, theatre and film set designer. The author of unique engravings, he was a prisoner of Auschwitz and at the same time a direct witness of St Maximilian Kolbe volunteering to die instead of Franciszek Gajowniczek, appointed by SS soldiers.

We cordially invite you to the II Doctoral School's Second National Academic Conference entitled 'God's Countenances after Auschwitz' on the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

The event will take place on 12-13 May 2025 in the Auditorium at 3 Bernardyńska Street, Krakow.

The 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War prompts us to reflect on the role of religion, the presence of God and theological interpretations in the context of the tragedy of the experience of warfare. The Second National Academic Conference of the Doctoral School of UPJPII entitled ‘God's Countenances after Auschwitz’ invites us to reflect together on these issues. During the conference, we particularly want to consider the Polish perspective of historical, legal, theological, philosophical and communication-media reflection, but we are open to broad views from other parts of the world.

Those interested in actively participating in the conference are invited to submit abstracts of presentations. Sample topics include:

- theological and philosophical reflections on the problem of evil;

- the presence of God in the context of the Second World War;

- the history and development of theology after the war experience;

- religious attitudes and reflections on the issues of suffering and evil;

- the influence of the war experience on philosophical and religious thought;

- the formation of the relationship between the state and the church in the face of the war experience;

- the role of the clergy during the wars or in the post-war realities;

- the formation of law - particularly canon law - in the post-war period;

- the memoirs of theologians and philosophers in the context of post-war trauma;

- ethics and morality in the face of historical extremes;

- the challenges of communicating a difficult past;

- the dilemmas of promotional communication of World War II memorials;

- media forms of communicating history and trauma.

We are also open to other proposals related to the main theme of the conference. Length of the planned speech: up to 20 minutes.

The conference fee is 100 PLN and will be transferred to the account indicated by the organisers upon acceptance of the abstract.

Submissions and abstracts can be sent until 11 April 2025 via the submission form: https://forms.gle/WoDEWzoTVTiV1s659

Information on acceptance or rejection of the paper will be sent to all submitters by email by 18 April 2025.
